process design process (page under construction)

my design process varies from project to project of course, but I am almost always initially inspired by one of the “spatial dramaturgy” photographs that I have been collecting for years (see process / spatial dramaturgy for more). below are some examples of design processes for a wide variety of productions in terms of scale and genre. looking back on these productions, I am amused to realize that many of them were inspired by the same visual reference / spatial dramaturgy images. for example, “jesus christ superstar”, “once on this island”, and “native gardens” are all examples of productions that explore ideas of embedded layers of architectural storytelling; “redwood”, “dermot kennedy”, “blue man group”, “bliss, school girls…”, “native gardens”, “lana del rey”, and “caroline, or change” all deal with trees in some way; and a discarded cut photograph inspired “next to normal”, “good grief”, and “caroline, or change”.
