a midsummer night’s dream / love’s labour’s lost juilliard 2016

IN 2014 I WAS ASKED BY THE JUILLIARD DRAMA DIVISION TO DESIGN A NEW SHAKESPEARE STAGE THAT COULD BE USED FOR THEIR ANNUAL SHAKESPEARE REPERTORY PRODUCTIONS WHERE THE THIRD YEAR DRAMA CLASS PERFORMS TWO VERY DIFFERENT SHAKESPEARE PLAYS ON ALTERNATING DAYS, DIRECTED BY TWO DIFFERENT DIRECTORS. I DESIGNED A MODERN TWIST ON THE ELIZABETHAN GLOBE STAGE THAT HAD AT IT’S CORE A SKELETAL STEEL GALLERY WITH REPOSITION-ABLE STAIRS, AND A MODIFIED THRUST STAGE GEOMETRY THAT WAS IN CONVERSATION WITH THE UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE OF THE JUILLIARD DRAMA THEATRE. THESE BASIC “BONES” WERE TRANSFORMED SIGNIFICANTLY FOR EACH DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT PRODUCTION, AND I WAS ABLE TO EXPERIMENT WITH THIS SET-UP FOR THREE YEARS AND SIX DIFFERENT PRODUCTIONS (AS YOU LIKE IT / RICHARD III IN 2014, MEASURE FOR MEASURE / THE WINTER’S TALE IN 2015, LOVE’S LABOUR’S LOST / A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM IN 2016)
